Props to the teachers

I knew teaching would be difficult, especially when I am coming with no experience and I am teaching to a classroom where 98% of the students don't really understand the language I can speak in, English.

I am at a semi-private school in Valencia, Spain. The years I am helping in are fourth, fifth, and sixth graders, so ages 9-12 give or take. I wasn't expecting it to be easy whatsoever, but I completely overlooked how young 9-12 year olds actually are. I think I also forgot I am no longer 18 and I am viewed as an adult, instead of just a cool "big kid".

It is so difficult being the adult because I am un-phased by a lot of things they do. I'd rather a kid sit on his desk and pay attention to me, than in his desk yelling or bothering their neighbor. I'd rather a kid practice their lines standing up or wherever than sitting doing nothing.

The fourth graders are in the phase of still thinking I am cool and also want to tell me everything about themselves. It really is so fun working with them because you can see them trying to find the English word to explain to me!! It is even better to see their face light up when the found the correct word AND when it was pronounced correctly to me.

I don't think I'll ever get over the sound of, "Liz! Liz! Liz", from kids half my size.. occasionally with a valid question, but most likely with something in Spanish where I then have to remind them once again to speak only in English... The kids are full of energy ALL THE TIME. I do love and look forward to all the hello's and "I'm fine, thank you" when I ask how they are, even more so when they can ask it back!

I forgot about all the tattletales!!!!!! Kids love to tell on one another and it's so ridiculous.... They also always seem to be crazy right when the teacher comes in to check on us, which makes me look like the bad guy because then she asks who is misbehaving and I can't say, "everything is okay" when they're all freaking out..

So props to all the teachers, who are somehow controlling 20-30 ten year olds!!! YOU'RE DOING GREAT (mom, dad, aunt meghan, kierstin, all my teachers throughout school & lots more - you're killing it)

p.s. even though there are a lot of wild kids, it is always a good laugh, and I look forward to learning Spanish so that I can know what they are saying when they are tattling, whining, and asking questions.

p.p.s shoutout to the fourth graders who love asking what my favorite color and sport and food are over and over

p.p.p.s you'll be the coolest adult in the room if you say your favorite food is pizza or ice cream
